Set previous entries to Friends Only
This guide will explain how you can automatically set all your LiveJournal entries to Friends only, private, or public. You will first need to download an older version of Semagic, a popular Livejournal client.
- Uninstall and exit any previous versions of Semagic you are running
- Install the downloaded file
- Double click the Semagic icon, and log in to the journal you wish to edit
- Click "View" → "Options"
- Click the advanced tab, and check the box labelled "Enable advanced history options".

- Click "OK"
- Click "LiveJournal" → "View History"

- Click "Change Security"
- Close the yellow coloured help box that pops up
- Click "Yes". Please note that the feature is EXPERIMENTAL. If you are concerned about the loss of entries, click "Yes" to step 17

- Click "Yes"
- Select the setting you want the entries to END UP AS (most likely Friends-only)

- Click "OK"
- Select the type of entries you WISH TO CHANGE (most likely Public)

- Click "OK"
- Click "Yes"
- Click "No". If you are worried about the potential loss of entries, click "Yes".
- Leave Semagic to modify all entries. The process could take up to an hour depending on the number of entries to be changed, and the speed of your connection.
As an alternative to Semagic you can also try HideJournal, a nifty little application written just for this purpose. However the tool does not work for some people, and it can have problems with older entries.
Set future entries to Friends Only
To make all FUTURE ENTRIES Friends-only, use this guide. You can also follow the guide provided by LiveJournal.
- Log in at LiveJournal.com
- Go to the admin console - http://www.livejournal.com/admin/console
- Type the following into the console - "set newpost_minsecurity level".
- Replace "level" with "friend" or "private"
- Click "Execute"
When you change the minimum security level of your journal, the Update Journal Interface (Update Journal page, a downloadable client, a voice post, or a post by email) will appear to default to 'Public', but LiveJournal will automatically change the security of the entry to your default level.
TO UNDO this setting, revisit the console, paste in the above command, replacing "level" with "public".
This guide comes from Cntl-Alt-Delete's LiveJournal. I've reproduced it here as the original guide was difficult to find (Google does not rank LiveJournal entries highly).
