I had a really good feeling when the train rolled into Helsinki, like my trip was really about to begin; I wasn't disappointed, my first day was fantastic. The central city is beautiful; full of old buildings and churches. The most spectacular buildings were designed by Carl Engel, which include the Senate Square, Tuomiokirkko (Lutheran cathedral), Helsinki University and library, and government palace. Although the central train station (image) designed by Eliel Saarinen is easily on par with these.
Quoting from The rough guide to Scandinavia, "Most of the streets leading into Senate Square are fairly narrow and unremarkable, however, a fact that serves to increase the impact as the square comes into view and you're struck by the sudden burst of space, the graceful symmetry of the buildings, and most of all by the exquisite form of the Tuomiokirkko".
A large city, I found it just right in terms of size, beauty and people. Although its population is only a third of that of Brisbane's, the city feels quite large, given the size and density of buildings in the central area. I set out early, picking up walking tour map which guided me through the best of the city, while in the afternoon I checked out the modern art gallery and some more buildings.
Helsinki Tuomiokirkko (Lutheran cathedral)
Small girl being pulled on a sled. Photo taken just in front of the cathedral. These little sleds with plastic runners/base were somewhat popular with the parents of small children in Helsinki.
Three Smiths, by Felix Nylund. This statue commemorates the workers of Finland who raised money to erect a building for the country's students - Vanha Ylioppistalo, or the old Student's House. This statue is just outside the main door of the student building.
The Kiasma museum of contemporary art. While the museum's exhibition is drawn from a large archive, it is the museum itself which is perhaps the most interesting work. Its play on light, sweeping walkways and overhanging arches make for an exciting display.
