That evening was more sedate, with Morten and I heading to the only public wood-fire sauna in Helsinki (more advice from Juho). It didn’t take me long to notice the difference, while still operating at the same temperature as an electric, the air here was moister, and the heat milder. The steam generated by the electric is more short-lived and tends to burn the skin.
Downing a light beer outside in -5c weather wearing nothing but a towel was a great experience. All the guys were quick to tell us about the Finnish sauna traditions. People love talking about the things they’re passionate about, especially cultural things to new people. I said goodbye to Morten later that evening, like myself he had only two days in Helsinki. Morten’s next stop was a 25 day stay on a sunny island off from Thailand, I’m sure he had a great time.
