I left hotel Milton around 11am and made my way down to the train station. Today I was making the journey from Jyväskylä to Savonlinna, to see the famous Olavinlinna castle, Scandinavia's best preserved medieval castle. While travelling north-south in Finland is a simple affair, east-west is another matter. I first caught the train to the small town Pieksämäki. After waiting around in the station for an hour, I then caught then bus to Savonlinna.
It was around 5pm by the time I reached Savonlinna. By this time it was quite dark, and I wasn't sure where the bus had stopped. I asked a girl who had also just gotten off the coach how I could get to the spa casino hotel. She pointed me in the right direction and off I went. I didn't get far before she called me back, saying that she could give me a lift, as her friends had just arrived. Her name was Marjo, and she was studying English translation here in Savonlinna. We chatted the all way to my hotel. We got along so well that Marjo offered to show me around the town the next day. I gladly accepted, always eager to pick up some local knowledge.
