I left Kemi around mid morning, making my way to Rovaniemi, the 'capital' of Lapland. Rovaniemi is popular with the tourist trade; sitting just a short bus ride south of the Arctic Circle, where you'll also find its star attraction - the Santa Claus Village. Rovaniemi is also home to the world's northern most McDonald's.
I caught the train to Rovaniemi with two Chinese backpackers who I had met at my hostel the other day. I was spending 2 days at Hostel Rudolf, an establishment 'devoid of any soul'; as accurately described by my Rough Guide. The hostel itself had no office, you had to walk 1km away to its parent company, the Santa Claus hotel. After much backtracking I got the keys. Empty, massively overpriced and lacking most facilities it was by far the worst accommodation I had stayed in. By this point in the trip I was really getting tired of the constant travelling, the empty accommodation, and short-term friendships. I was really looking forward to arriving in Stockholm on Sunday, where I would be given a brief respite from the constant moving. I spent the rest of the evening recuperating from an afternoon of lugging around my heavy pack.
