Today was clear and sunny, a rarity here in wintery Scandinavia, so I decided to spend it sightseeing beautiful Stockholm. After a quick stop at the university to see the department's regular Wednesday morning floorball game (hockey with a ball), I hop on Stockholm's tunnelbana (metro/subway), and head straight to Gamla Stan (old town).
With its towering churches and mixture of medieval and classical settings, the town is a hotspot of tourism. At the border between new and old Stockholm lies the city's parliament building Riksdagshuset, passing through which is the street of Riksgatan. Perhaps Stockholm's most impressive building, it is undeniably beautiful.
The city differs from that of Helsinki; while on the whole Stockholm is more stirring in its size, history and ornateness, the individual works of the Finnish masters Engels and Saarinen are uniquely stunning, and outdo that of its Swedish rival.
